How To | Prevent Acne

Saturday, 12 April 2014

While I don't struggle with crazy amounts of acne, I do have sensitive skin that when not treated properly, leads to breakouts. Because no one likes breakouts, I thought I would share my best tips for preventing those painful breakouts.
Disclaimer: I'm not a professional by any means, These are just the tips that work for me.

1. Wash Your Face

This sounds like a no-brainer, however you would be surprised at the number of girls I meet who fall asleep with their makeup on. While I know sometimes you are tired and just want to crawl into bed, I suggest keep makeup remover wipes beside your bed. Even just using those instead of a full face wash can save your skin from a bout of acne popping up overnight.

2. Wash Your Hands

Another 'duh' moment, but often throughout the day we touch our faces without thinking of all the dirty grimey things we have come into contact with. I would say personally that 80% of my breakouts occur from areas of my face that I touch without thinking. Try not to touch your face, wash your hands often and carry around hand sanitizer to prevent acne bacteria from growing on your face.

3. Wash Your Brushes

It's a pain, I know. But isn't it more of a pain to battle your breakouts? That's what I thought. Wash your brushes at least once a week (more if you use them every day) to prevent all that nasty bacteria from wreaking havoc on your face.

4. Exfoliate

By clearing away all the dead skin and gunk that can get lodged in your pores, your skin can breathe! Exfoliating at least once a week is a great way to clean out those pores. Use something gentle that won't damage the skin. I like to use more natural exfoliants like sugar or jojoba granules.

5. Tone Up!

By keeping your PH levels of your face slightly acidic, it prevents the acne bacteria from being able to survive on your face. My favourite, natural way to do this is by using orange blossom water as a toner. It smells amazing and keep my skin clear.

6. Cut Out Sugar

This is the last and most painful step, especially for a sweet lover like me. However, sugar causes me crazy breakouts. So for me it's a game of would you rather: sweet treat or clear skin?

Spring Beauty Must Haves

Spring beauty

I love spring: the warm sunshine and the flowers chasing away the winter blues! With the change in season, comes the change in makeup. I break out the soft pinks and peaches, lighten up the foundation by swapping it with BB Cream, and generally keeping things light and fresh looking. Here are some of my favourites for spring:

NYX Butter Lipsticks
L'Oreal Infaliable Pressed Pigments
Maybelline Falsies Volume Express Mascara
Rimmel Natural Bronzer
NYX Powder Blush
L'Oreal BB Cream

What are your spring must haves? Let me know!

Empties | March 2014

Monday, 3 March 2014

I have so many empties this month it's crazy! That being said, I'm going to jump right in or we will be here all day.

Bath and Bodyworks Winter Apple Shower Gel

Smells de-licious! Repuchase? Nah. It smells nice, but I definitely have better smelling and feeling body washes.

Maybelline Fit Me Concealer

I did really like this concealer in the summer, but now it's too dark for me so obviously I wasn't able to use it as much. Repuchase? It was good, but there are better out there so no.

SatinCare Floral Passion Shave Gel

Smells wonderful! Does the job. Repurchase? I'm using the one for dry skin now so probably not.

Soap & Glory's Glad Hair Day Shampoo

It smells good as all S&G does. It was fairly clarfying for a shampoo which I like, but it didn't dazzle me as I hoped it would. Repurchase? No.

Smashbox Photo Finish Light Primer

Love this primer and how it feels but it breaks me out like mad. Repurchase? Nope.

Bioderma Micellar Cleansing Water

Absolutely 100% in love. I have yet to find any cleanser that is more gentle, refreshing and gets even my eye makeup off. It's completely replaced makeup remover towelettes for me as its so nice to just grab a cotton pad and sweep this across your face. In love. Repurchase? Already have a big bottle!

Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream

I actually really liked the feel and coverage of this however it just wasn't in my correct shade. Repurchase? If I can find a shade match, definitely.

Marcelle Essentials Night Cream

I love Marcelle and will probably always sing their praises. I really don't think they can make a bad product. This night cream was refreshing and moisturizing, but not too thick, which was great for the summer and spring months. I had to switch to something thicker for winter, but that's to be expected. Repuchase? Yes, in the summer.

Physcians' Forumla Super BB Concealer

I really wanted to like this but it was just okay for me. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it. I felt like it was a good sheer coverage, but a little too thin. Repurchase? No

Gilette Venus Razor

I feel like I'm forever on the hunt for a good razor. So far this is my go-to as it seems to glide well, doesn't ever really give me razor burn or anything like that, and most importantly, hasn't nicked me. Repurchase? For now. I feel like there might be a better razor out there.

Lush Seanik Shampoo

Holy Grail Shampoo if I've ever seen one. Cleans my hair, gets rid of and doesn't leave any build-up, makes my hair soft, smells great AND to top it all off - VOLUME like mad! I also love the shampoo bar concept! I felt like it lasted way longer than any bottle of shampoo would. The only downside is it is not SLS. WHY??? Repurchase? Every fibre of my being says yes and yet the sulfates are saying no.

Maybelline Mega Plush Mascara

I feel like i'm the only one in the world who though this mascara was just okay. I love the concept, but too me it didn't act enough like mascara for me to like it. More of just a lash tint, which is okay if that's what your looking for. I loved that my lashes wren't crunchy, but that was about it. Repurchase? No.

Essence Get Big Waterproof Mascara

This is my go-to waterproof mascara. It makes your lashes so dramatic and beautiful - I can't help but always have a tube of this. Repurchase? Heck yes!

Marcelle BB Cream

Love. Will always love. Don't love how expensive it is. That being said, it is worth the money. It is by far the best BB cream I have ever tried.

These were my empties for the past few months. What have you used up and loved? Let me know!

Drugstore Skincare Routine

Drugstore skincare routine

Drugstore Skincare Routine

It's a myth that you have to spend a lot to get any benefit from a skincare regimen. In fact, I have found quite a few skincare gems at the drugstore the will stop you from wasting your time and money. While I try out new products a lot, the following skincare regimen is the one I go back to time and time again - because it works!

Makeup Remover Towlettes

These are a life saver when it comes to those long days where you get home and can' wait for your head to hit the pillow. One of the worst things you can do to your skin is to sleep with your makeup on. These towelette are a quick and easy fix to just wipe off your makeup quickly before you go to bed. I recommend the Neutrogena ones (as pictures above) or the calming ones from Pond's as they are soothing to the skin.

Gentle Cleanser

When you do have more time to take your makeup off, or when you first get up in the morning, a gentle cleanser is a must. This is going to prep your skin for the day (or for sleep) and get rid of all the junk. I like to use Cetaphil or CeraVe for my cleansing needs.

Face Masks

Whether you just want to having a relaxing spa night, or you need a little extra help for your skin, there are an array of face masks for skin needs, whether it's hydration, brightening, blemish-control, etc. My favourite masks are from Freeman and Balea as they are both affordable and effective.

Face Scrub

My skin gets crazy dry in the winter, so you can bet I need a facial scrub to exfloiante off all those dry flakey patches. Because my skin is also sensitive, I always look for a scrub that has microbeads or has smaller, gentler granules as I don't want to damage the skin with anything too harsh. My favourite scrubs are Neutrogena's Rapid Clear and plain ol' raw sugar!

Like I said, my skin is dry dry DRY, so moisturizer is a MUST! When I'm looking for a moisturizer, I look for one with hydrolauronic acid and ceramides because they will lock the moisture into the skin. I also look for one that is suitable for sensitive and won't cause me to break out. My favourite drugstore pick is CeraVe.

Cleansing Tools

Once a week I like to make sure I get a really deep clean. I do this to get deep down into my pores and get out all the makeup, bacteria, oils, dirt, dead skin and whatever else may be hiding in them. Like most, I did not want to pay 200+ bucks for the clarisonic without knowing whether or not my skin would agree with it. After reading tons of reviews, I saw the the Olay Pro X was a similar system at the drugstore that was not only hundreds of dollars cheaper, but it seemed to be effective and safe for my sensitive skin. This system was probably the best skincare investment I have ever made! I highly recommend to anyone looking to get a deeper clean.

So these are my drugstore skin-favourites! What are yours? Let me know!
